The best football strikers ever

In football the striker is the player whose main goal is to score as many goals as possible. There have been many great strikers, but who are the greatest strikers ever?

1

Pelé

Pele It is not surprisingly that Pelé is our greatest striker ever, if you only look at his statistics you will see why. The Brazilian scored 1281 goals in 1363 games, a number which hasn't been repeated by any player until today. Pelé scored goals on several ways, always looking for a possibility to shoot on goal. He was a great header although he wasn't the tallest, he scored several bicycle goals but the way he scored most of his goals was with he's great kick, Pelé could shoot very well with both of his legs.

2

Ferenc Puskás

Ferenc Puskás Hungarian player Puskás was a great striker, he had one of the best shots in football history. This helped him score a lot of goals , he scored 513 goals in 528 matches. As a captain of Hungary Puskas scored 84 times in 85 matches, helping them win a gold medal at the 1952 Olympics, and a place in the final of the 1954 FIFA World Cup.

3

Ronaldo

Ronaldo Ronaldo was the greatest striker of the late '90s and early '00s. In this period he was just unstoppable, he could score from any position at any moment. The Brazilian always scored a lot of goals at any team he played with. At the 2006 World Cup Ronaldo scored his 15th World Cup goal and became record holder of scoring the most goals at World Cups.

4

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona Maradona only on four, surprised? No this list is about the best strikers ever and Maradona was more an attacking midfielder, however Maradona was still a great finisher, he could score out of incredible positions, with incredible shots but he also created a scoring change from nowhere by dribbling past defenders like they were not there. It helped him score a lot of goals.

5

Eusébio

Eusébio Eusébio, nicknamed "The Black Panther" was the first big player born in Africa. He is Benfica´s all-time top scorer with 638 goals in 614 matches. Eusébio impressed with Portugal at the 1966 World Cup where he became top scorer with 9 goals.

6

Marco van Basten

Marco van Basten Ajax and Milan hero, van Basten was a great striker. He won the European Championship with Holland in 1988, becoming top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals. He was a very talented player but was forced to retire his career early at age 30 due to an ankle injury.

7

Gerd Müller

Gerd Müller Müller won the World Cup with West-Germany in 1974 , he scored a total of 68 goals in 62 matches for the national team. He was nicknamed "Der Bomber" because of his incredible scoring ability. He scored 401 goals in 441 matches as a striker of Bayern Munich.

8

Fernando Peyroteo

Fernando Peyroteo Few will have heard about him, but Fernando Peyroteo is the player with the highest goals per game ratio (1.68). Compare this with Pelé who has a ratio of 0.96 goals per game. Peyroteo played as a striker of Sporting during the 40's where he scored 331 goals in 187 games. Although it was a different time without European football, he remains one of the greatest strikers ever.

9

Arthur Friedenreich

Arthur Friedenreich Friedenreich played even before WWI, from 1909 to 1935. There is not much footage of him but his number of goals is amazing. There is confusion about the exact number, some say he scored 1239 goals in 1329 games, while others suggest it were 1329 goals in 1239 games. Friedenreich was nicknamed "The King of Football" before Pelé took this title.

10

Romario

Romario He is one of the few players that scored more than 1000 goals. He was the striker of Barcelona's dream team during the early 90's that was coached by Johan Cruyff. He won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, winning the golden ball for best player.

Pre late 50's football was rough in terms of tackles, poor pitches etc.... but ever poorer in terms of tactics, fitness, speed and skill, football was like a school boy match, poor quality players, in small stadiums, sure the balls were heavier, but the tactics were suited to circumvent them i.e. today's 4-3-3 was sometimes 3-2-5, so u'd see 13-7 games quite frequently,so goal poachers reveled most in them circumstances i.e. Gerd Muller(who came after that time, but still the same thing) so i wouldn't even take notice of those records from back then, i'm sure I've scored at a ratio better than 1.77 in my school days! the 1950's and 1960's were similar too, the 1970's football started advancing slightly, but it wasn't until the 1980's with maradonna, zico, platini, mattheus, klinsmann and the Milan dutch trio that the game started to reach its peak, which eventually came in 1996, that year in Barcelona football had just hit its highest standard to date, when a young RONALDO came about, the best striker in the history of the game bar none since and after, better than all!!! just imagine he never got those injuries, he would have won 3 world cups, his 15 goal record would have been 30 goal record, all of messi's records would have been his records, and he would go down as the undisputed best ever!!! but it never happened, i hope messi does it! stuff pre-80's football it doesn't matter, zico's 82 team kick started the zenith of football, and ronaldo completed it(along with zizou, rivaldo, figo, del piero etc... Best 5 strikers ever: 1. RONALDO. 2.ROMARIO. 3.VAN BASTEN. 4.BATISTUTA. 5.VIERI. BEST PLAYERS EVER 1.MARADONNA. 2. RONALDO 3. MESSI 4.RIVALDO 5.ZIDANE. BEST DEFENDERS EVER 1.BARESI. 2.MALDINI 3.VIERCHWOOD. 4.NESTA. 5.CANNAVARO. BEST TEAM EVER BARCELONA 2009 OR BRAZIL 1982! BEST MANAGER EVER: MOURINHO! BEST second striker ever: 1. Maradonna. 2. Rivaldo. 3. Baggio. 4.Bergkamp. 5.Socrates. Just my two cents!

Messi and ronaldo can not be compared to pele and maradona. Most of the people that are commenting have no football knowledge so just shut up. Messi is a really good football player but ronaldo can no finish even an open goal his good but his an in completed football player he should stop all these stupid tricks that get him no where. If he was to stop all this crap that he does he would be much better even best in the world.

Romario should be on the top of the list, he was the best, no any other players has the skills Romario has
.   December 29, 2012 at 6:30 pm
Messi quite clearly is one of the best as he holds the world record and you can't compare! Keepers quality has improved and if you stuck likes of Gerard carragher and Parker etc. there would have been tougher challenges on the likes of pele! He would have no chance getting past other legends from around 10 20 years ago

The 6 greatest strikers from 1950s onwards are: Puskas, Eusébio, Muller, Van Basten, Romário and Ronaldo, Fontaine. No other name can be put in the same league as those six in modern football strikers. Now, I don't understand why Pelé and Maradona, who were not strikers, were included on a list of greatest strikers. Sure they could score goals, but that does not mean they played as centre-forwards. They were number 10 play-makers, who played as either attacking midfielders or second strikers. Definitely not number 9 players. Anyway, if I was going to risk an order, it would be: 1) Ronaldo 2) Puskas 3) Muller 4) Eusébio 5) Romário 6) Van Basten 7) Fontaine Pelé and Maradona were NOT strikers!

heavyrules   December 14, 2012 at 11:51 pm
Really? Really? Stop lying to yourself and to other people. Counting the goals pele scored in friendly matches? Pele: 680 in 720 for clubs and 77 in 92 for brazil. Guerd muller 487 in 555 for clubs 68 in 62 matches for germany.Puskas 508 in 521 for clubs 85 in 84 for Hungary. Guerd muller played in much harder league than pele and has better ratio at national level.

I think Pele is the Greatest striker ever but not player of all time ,I think the worlds Greatest player of all time regardless of scoring and overall record is sum1 of the 1st half century like Andres of uraguay he won the 1st ever world cup or how about Steve Bloomer of England when they were the undisputed rulers of the world. It cud easily b Sir Stanley Matthews afterall even Pele said that he led the way for modern day stars.
