The best football midfielders ever

The midfielder has to attack as well as to defend. They connect the defense and attack of a team. So who are the best midfielders ever?

Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff Cruyff was a total footballer, he could play anywhere on the pitch but was mainly used as an attacking midfielder. He organized the attack, had a great vision and an amazing dribble. He lost the final of the 1974 World Cup with Holland, one of the best teams that never won the World Cup.

Alfredo Di Stéfano

Alfredo Di Stéfano Real Madrid legend Di Stéfano is often referred as a forward but is in this list because he played more like a midfielder, helping in the defense and setting up an attack. Di Stéfano had a great stamina, tactical sense and vision. He was very successful with Madrid winning five consecutive European Cups (1956-1960).

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona Maradona was great attacking midfielder. Of course he has his great dribbles, but Maradona could give brilliant passes to his teammates as well. He helped Argentina win the 1986 almost single handedly. He's main advantage as a midfielder were he's attacking qualities, however he's lack of defending skills makes him on third place only.

Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane Zinedine Zidane was a real playmaker. With his vision he would set up an attack, dribble around some players and score goals. It was because of Zidane France won the World Cup in 1998 by scoring two goals in the final. Two years later in 2000 he helped France win the European Championship. Besides being a playmaker, Zidane was very skilled, he had a great bal control and a great free kick.

Garrincha Garrincha is widely seen as one of the greatest dribblers of all time. He won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958 and 1962. His left leg was six centimeters shorter than his right. This might have given him the ability to have such a great acceleration that no defender could follow.

Michel Platini

Michel Platini Platini helped France win the 1984 European Championship. He was a brilliant playmaker with an amazing free kick. He is one of the midfielders in the World Team of the 20th Century.

George Best

George Best Man United legend George Best was one of the greatest wingers of all time. Best was a brilliant dribbler, he had a great acceleration which helped him get past defenders easily. He scored 138 goals in 361 appearances for Manchester United and helped them win the European Cup in 1968.

Zico Zico played three World Cups with Brazil (1978, 1982, 1986), but never won the tournament. He scored 66 goals in 88 matches for Brazil. He is often referred to as "The white Pelé". He was a great free kick taker and a great dribbler.

Francisco Gento

Francisco Gento Gento was one of the players of the Real Madrid that dominated the 50s and 60s. He is the only player that won the European Cup six times and one of the two players that played eight European Cup finals(Paolo Maldin is the other).

Bobby Charlton

Bobby Charlton Bobby Charlton is widely regarded as one of England's greatest players ever. As one of the few survivors of the Munich air tragedy Charlton went on to help Manchester United win the European Cup ten years later in 1968. He won the World Cup with England in 1966 and the golden ball for best player of the tournament.

ALso why do you idiots favor players from this age, gerrard couldn't touch cruyff with a ten foot pole. and whoever said that Christiano Ronaldo And Scholes are the best players ever are dumb, there are far better players than them in their generation, i already mentioned gigs and as far as Christiano, messi is better. and Stop being blind Man U and Liverpool supporters

NO. to whoever was raving about Paul Scholes, Ryan Gigs, on the same team at the same time as him was far better and even he probably doesn't deserve to make the top 10 ever. As far as people who said messi and C. ronaldo, they are kind of right in that both were midfielders (and at this time for longer than they have been Forwards) but they haven't retired yet and have played better as forwards so they can't and shouldn't be on the list. next Maradona should be second or first, there is no way that he should be below Di Stephano And he probably should have beaten Cruyff.

I would absolutely place Ronaldinho and Xavi on this list. They are better players just because the game has evolved and players now can do much more and are more athletic. However, even when compared to their generation I would still place those two on the list. In 20 years they will be.

Rating Ronaldinho, Xavi and Iniesta above some of these greats? Unbelievable. Can tell half of these comments are from little boys who have never had the privilege of watching some of these legends play.

Antony   October 28, 2012 at 6:45 pm
The def of a midfielder is " They connect the defense and attack of a team " so zidane is the best. Zizou made it look soooo easy, the game was breathing when he had the ball
eka   October 27, 2012 at 3:46 pm
Xavi and pirlo should be on the list, so the list will be 1. Alfredo di Stefano 2. Diego Maradona 3. Zinedine Zidane 4. Johan Cruyff 5. Xavier Hernandez 6. George Best 7. Andrea Pirlo 8. Michel Platini 9. Garrincha 10. Zico

Ronaldo Iniesta Xavi Pirlo not sure after that, i rate ribery, robben, david silva, fabregas, alonso, ozil, sneijder, schweinsteiger, david villa and modric highly i'd say players such as kaka, scholes, ronaldhinio and others are past there best Zizou is by far the best overall the past two decades mind

yous are deluded if you think xavi needs to go on the list cos u forgot 1 player in the current barca squad that is better than him and this is no argument and that is iniesta who is just as good as messi
Michael   August 21, 2012 at 4:08 pm
What on earth? Laudrup beats half that list, heck even 2 of the best current playmakers, inieasta and xavi sees him as the best player ever.
kells   August 17, 2012 at 9:28 pm

The undisputed midfielder is XAVI Hernandes of Barcellona,He is so simple @ makes Barcellona to play. Not tough,no speed but he can dictate the game.Like it or not ,he is the genious. If players can copy him ,the stadiums will be packed all over the world. He makes football an audiable language
