The best football midfielders ever

The midfielder has to attack as well as to defend. They connect the defense and attack of a team. So who are the best midfielders ever?

Johan Cruyff

Johan Cruyff Cruyff was a total footballer, he could play anywhere on the pitch but was mainly used as an attacking midfielder. He organized the attack, had a great vision and an amazing dribble. He lost the final of the 1974 World Cup with Holland, one of the best teams that never won the World Cup.

Alfredo Di Stéfano

Alfredo Di Stéfano Real Madrid legend Di Stéfano is often referred as a forward but is in this list because he played more like a midfielder, helping in the defense and setting up an attack. Di Stéfano had a great stamina, tactical sense and vision. He was very successful with Madrid winning five consecutive European Cups (1956-1960).

Diego Maradona

Diego Maradona Maradona was great attacking midfielder. Of course he has his great dribbles, but Maradona could give brilliant passes to his teammates as well. He helped Argentina win the 1986 almost single handedly. He's main advantage as a midfielder were he's attacking qualities, however he's lack of defending skills makes him on third place only.

Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane Zinedine Zidane was a real playmaker. With his vision he would set up an attack, dribble around some players and score goals. It was because of Zidane France won the World Cup in 1998 by scoring two goals in the final. Two years later in 2000 he helped France win the European Championship. Besides being a playmaker, Zidane was very skilled, he had a great bal control and a great free kick.

Garrincha Garrincha is widely seen as one of the greatest dribblers of all time. He won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958 and 1962. His left leg was six centimeters shorter than his right. This might have given him the ability to have such a great acceleration that no defender could follow.

Michel Platini

Michel Platini Platini helped France win the 1984 European Championship. He was a brilliant playmaker with an amazing free kick. He is one of the midfielders in the World Team of the 20th Century.

George Best

George Best Man United legend George Best was one of the greatest wingers of all time. Best was a brilliant dribbler, he had a great acceleration which helped him get past defenders easily. He scored 138 goals in 361 appearances for Manchester United and helped them win the European Cup in 1968.

Zico Zico played three World Cups with Brazil (1978, 1982, 1986), but never won the tournament. He scored 66 goals in 88 matches for Brazil. He is often referred to as "The white Pelé". He was a great free kick taker and a great dribbler.

Francisco Gento

Francisco Gento Gento was one of the players of the Real Madrid that dominated the 50s and 60s. He is the only player that won the European Cup six times and one of the two players that played eight European Cup finals(Paolo Maldin is the other).

Bobby Charlton

Bobby Charlton Bobby Charlton is widely regarded as one of England's greatest players ever. As one of the few survivors of the Munich air tragedy Charlton went on to help Manchester United win the European Cup ten years later in 1968. He won the World Cup with England in 1966 and the golden ball for best player of the tournament.

In my opinion Zidane and maradona are greatest midfielders. They were very attacking and it looked liked as if they were strikers of their team.

The best midfielder ever to live, not in terms of awards, but in terms of a complete player, is Paul Scholes. He had tactical awareness, strength, stamina, speed(in his prime), a brilliant and unique technique, great finishing, but what really makes him stand out, is his passing perfection. He could get the ball anywhere he wanted on the pitch, with both feet. He is the most complete player ever to live, and one of the most underrated.

Giggs soon will made his name in the list as well..He's just renewing the love in every game..Im probably gonna miss him..
theone   January 28, 2013 at 7:05 pm
I would rate Best as number one. Those times, the players do not have the facilities that Messi or Ronaldo have now. They dont have Mercurial or AdiZero F50. But still, Best dribbles like nobody's business..Have a watch of his dribbles..
