The best football goalkeepers ever

The goalkeeper is the only player in football who can use his hands. They are responsible for keeping the ball out of their goal. So who are the greatest goalkeepers ever?

Lev Yashin

Lev Yashin Lev Yashin is widely considered as the greatest goalkeeper ever. The Soviet player saved 150 penalties in his entire career and is the only goalkeeper who received the European footballer of the year award. He kept almost 500 clean sheets in 812 games, an amazing number.

Gordon Banks

Gordon Banks Banks won the World Cup with England in 1966, but he is most famous for his save on a header of Pelé at the 1970 World Cup, which is widely seen as one of the greatest saves ever. Pelé was already shouting "Goal!" when Banks saved the ball out of the right corner of the goal.

Iker Casillas

Iker Casillas Casillas won the World Cup with Spain in 2010, making two crucial saves in the final in one-on-one situations against Arjen Robben. He also won the European Championship in 2008 and 2012. He has won the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper award four times.

Dino Zoff

Dino Zoff Dino Zoff is the oldest player ever to win the World Cup, he did this at age 40 with Italy in 1982. Zoff is also holding the record for longest playing time without conceding goals in international tournaments (1142 minutes).

Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel Peter Schmeichel was one of the key players of the successful Manchester United of the 90's. He helped Denmark win the 1992 European Championship with several great saves and was elected World's Best Goalkeeper the same year.

Sepp Maier

Sepp Maier Sepp Maier played his whole career for Bayern Munich, where he played along with Beckenbauer. He won three consecutive European Cups with Bayern and won the 1974 World Cup with Germany.

Peter Shilton

Peter Shilton Shilton played over 30 years as a goalkeeper, he played 125 matches for England. He was
England´s goalkeeper when Maradona scored his "hand of god" goal against them.

Oliver Kahn

Oliver Kahn Oliver Kahn won the European Cup with Germany in 1996 and earned the Golden Ball for his performance at the 2002 World Cup in which Germany lost in the final against Brazil. He also became three times IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper.

Gianluigi Buffon

Gianluigi Buffon Seven times Serie A goalkeeper of the year and four times IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper, Buffon proved to be a great goalkeeper. He won the World Cup in 2006 with Italy and was awarded goalkeeper of the tournament.

Edwin van der Sar

Edwin van der Sar Van der Sar won the Champions League with Ajax in 1995 and did the same 13 years later with Manchester United in 2008. Despite that he is one of the greatest goalkeepers never to win any World Cup or European Cup.

Buffon's acrobatic skills are mental, and he will appear out of nowhere to save a ball that no one else could get to

Tim Howard (USA) should have been on this list already, and yesterday's game against Belgium confirmed that he is one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time. Great effort by the USA late in the game may I add.

Every keeper has his day, and every keeper has his day off.. If I had to pick a favorite amongst the ones in the list, I'd say Peter Schmeichel. He stood tall until the day he retired.. He never overstayed his welcome like most footballers tend to do.. And this is coming from a Gooner.. I hate the guy with a passion.. But that does not mean I didn't admire his skills :)

Buffon is the best goalkeeper there is no doubt about that if you understand anything about football, especially vander sar and casillas are not worth half of Buffon

I think honestly if this wasn't biased towards goalkeepers from countries such as England big Pat 'Shovel Hands' Jennings would be in the top 3 the only reason he isn't up there is because he played for Northern Ireland and not a big country it would have been a different story if he had played for England hence the phrase over biased towards English players once again
